The Distinctive Design / Build team is named one of the best remodeling companies in America in 2018.
It all started when we swept up at the 2017 CotY (Contractor of the Year) awards for the Charlotte chapter of NARI (National Assocation of the Remodeling Industry) with four category winners, the People's Choice award for Best Exterior AND the Best In Show award. The CotY awards are judged by an impartial panel of judges who are experts from within the remodeling industry. A CotY award winner is an entry that demonstrates remodeling excellence. Entries are judged on functionality, problem-solving, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, the degree of difficulty, and entry presentation.
This was the first year for the People's Choice award where the general public voted for the Best Interior Remodel and Best Exterior Remodel. Competitors in the People's Choice and the CotYs represent the "cream of the crop" of remodelers in the Charlotte metro area and we are proud to be the most-awarded Design / Build team in town!
But that was just the beginning of the winnings. Each of these projects went on to win regional awards! That means they were all judged to be the best project in their categories in the 10-state Southeast region. It truly is an amazing honor to be recognized for our Design / Build work at this competitive level.
And last, but certainly not least, one of our regional winners went on to win a national Contractor of the Year award!

Shower Me with Love
Winner
Residential Interior Element Under $30K
BEFORE
The master bathroom in this home is only about 49 SF. The homeowner did not want to increase the footprint. But, she did want it to live large. Considering the average master bathroom is 160 SF – this was a real challenge. The homeowner wanted the remodeled space to compliment her historic Myers Park home but she also wanted it to have a modern sensibility. Converting the old cast iron tub into a fabulous shower was priority #1. We installed a barrier-free shower with a luxurious, dual-head shower system. The tile on the main floor of the bathroom flows right into the shower with no curb. A wall-hung toilet frees up precious floor space along with the wall-hung vanity. This bathroom remodel proves bigger is not always better.

"I can't even begin to tell you what a difference our master bathroom remodel has made for our day-to-day living. We used to dread going into our old bathroom. It was damp and dingy. The lighting was awful. The tub was like climbing into a cave! Now the whole space is light and bright and, even though we didn't add any square footage, it feels so much bigger." Beth S. - Homeowner
Into the Great Wide Open
BEFORE
The back porch on this Lake Norman home was penned in by a railing and load-bearing columns. There was no place to soak up the sun and not enough room for al fresco dining. The homeowners wanted a wide, open deck with a hot tub and plenty of space for lounge chairs, a dining table and barbeque. They dreamed of being able to soak in their hot tub and gaze at their million-dollar view - nothing between them and the lake but trees.

“Because of their knowledge and experience, they were able to come up with a strategy for us to get rid of as many railings as we possibly could while still meeting code. This required careful planning and attention to detail as well as coordination with the landscaper. It was like putting together a large puzzle and every piece had to fit just right.” Matt G. - Homeowner

Tiny Tremendous Transformation
BEFORE
Winner
Residential Bathroom from $25-50K
The secondary bathroom in this Myers Park home is less than 45 square feet but it serves a big purpose. A teenage girl is the main user of this tiny bathroom – but it’s also the guest bath for two other bedrooms so it had to be stylish and hard working. Mom was ready to get rid of the Pepto Bismol pink and green color scheme – while daughter wanted more space to store her lotions and potions as well as better lighting to put on her makeup. There was no practical way to increase the footprint – so we had to make every inch count. Plumbing and electrical lines had to be re-routed to make room for a pocket door which improved traffic flow in this small space.

“I am so excited that my guest bathroom remodel won an award! One look at the BEFORE photos and you can see what a difference this project made for our family. It was a real collaboration and I couldn't have done it without Vince and Erin's expertise and guidance. We were so pleased with the Distinctive Design / Build process - we're having them remodel our porch and garage next!” Beth S. - Homeowner

Masterful Master Bath
BEFORE
Winner
Residential Bath from $50-75K
The master bathroom in this 1960s home was chopped up with a separate dressing area and vanity outside the main bathroom area. The homeowners are two busy professionals who disliked the bathroom so much, they were using a bathroom upstairs! They wanted the master bathroom to be modernized and more functional. Having a huge shower for two was on the top of their priority list. Budget was a concern since they wanted to remodel their kitchen at the same time as the master bathroom in order to get all the construction done at once.

Taking down the wall between the main bath and dressing area made all the difference. We converted the existing tub into an oversized, barrier-free shower for two by taking over a closet in the hallway and eliminating a bulkhead over the tub. Adding a curb-less shower to an existing home requires careful management during design and construction. Many pieces need to fit together including sub-floor framing, plumbing drain lines and the slope of the shower. Mosaic tile on the floor of the shower matches the slate-colored ceramic tile on the main floor. Oversized white subway tile extends around the shower, and stretches from floor to ceiling, which visually heightens the shower and minimizes grout lines. It’s also a very cost-effective tile selection and helped these homeowners stay on budget.
